Who Are Derpy and Sussie?
Derpy is the goofy blue tiger and Sussie is the magpie who wears a traditional Korean gat hat. The pair is a playful nod to jakhodo (also called hojakdo), the traditional Korean folk paintings of a tiger and a magpie. In those paintings the tiger is often drawn as funny rather than fierce, just like Derpy.
Color Derpy Like a Korean Folk Painting
- Pine tree setting: classic jakhodo scenes show the magpie perched in a pine tree. Color the branches brown and the needles deep green.
- Magpie colors: magpies are black and white, with a blue-green shine on the wings and tail. Add a little teal over the black.
- Paper background: fill the background a warm cream or pale beige so it looks like old painting paper.
- Blue tiger: use a mid blue for Derpy's fur and a darker navy for the stripes.
